The electric vehicle (EV) revolution took a major step forward today, as Sustainable Westchester, Westchester County's leading advocate for community resilience and provider of renewable energy, unveiled a new EV fast charging station powered entirely by solar energy that is the first of its kind in New York State. The project involves a complex system of an 85 kW solar photovoltaic array, a 180kWh on site storage battery, and twin Jule 75 kW DC fast chargers that can charge any kind of electric vehicle with more than 100 miles of range in under 24 minutes.

The charging facility is located in a publicly accessible parking lot located at 40 Green Street, which is also the home of the County police, the Mount Kisco Village Court and the Mount Kisco Historical Society. The accessible charging hub serves not only as a modern amenity but also as a gateway to the local community. Positioned within walking distance from the Village's commercial hub and train station, it beckons zero-emission vehicle owners to explore nearby shops and restaurants while they recharge their rides.

The impact of the “Sunshine to EV” project extends well beyond powering EVs: excess electricity generated by the facility is prioritized for low-and moderate-income (LMI) households through Sustainable Westchester’s Community Solar program, which aims to equitably share the benefits of clean energy among historically underserved communities.

Ribbon cutting ceremony at Mt. Kisco.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sustainable Westchester’s Mount Kisco, NY headquarters was attended by a diverse range of state and local elected officials, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, EV charger manufacturer Jule, Con Edison, renewable energy industry leaders and environmental advocates. The group celebrated the cutting-edge initiative as a compelling proof of concept that could be replicated throughout New York in service of the State’s visionary climate, clean energy, and environmental justice goals.

The system was partially funded by a $250,000 grant through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure program, and also supported by the North American EV charger manufacturer Jule. The effort builds on recent progress to expand EV charging infrastructure in Westchester County, including the addition of 90 new stations by the City of Yonkers in April 2023, and 34 new stations by the Village of Tuckahoe.

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “By coupling renewable energy with electric vehicle charging, we are showing a powerful model demonstrating the potential of bringing projects to life which will make it possible to scale solutions that lower carbon emissions, reduce the use of fossil fuels, and create healthier places for us to live and work. We commend Sustainable Westchester on bringing this project to fruition, placing clean transportation at the core of the community and truly putting clean energy in the hands of more New Yorkers.”

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “New York State is undertaking ambitious actions to reduce climate-altering emissions and invest in clean, green infrastructure through initiatives like the Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program. DEC is proud to partner with communities like Mount Kisco and leaders like Sustainable Westchester who are working locally to address the climate crisis, helping to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers while bolstering the State’s efforts to address the climate crisis.”

New York State Senator and Chair of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee Peter Harckham said: “I applaud Sustainable Westchester for its continued work in creating a more energy resilient Westchester County. This project makes it easier for Mount Kisco residents and visitors to charge their electric vehicles, which is certainly necessary as we continue to transition to a carbon-free future. Expanding our EV charging infrastructure encourages people to see EV vehicles as the rule and not the exception in our quest to green our transportation sector. Thank you to NYSERDA for its role in this landmark project.”

“We are grateful for the support we have received on the state and local levels throughout the planning and development of this exciting project,” said Sustainable Westchester Interim CEO Jim Kuster. “We look forward to continuing to find ways to bring clean energy to our member municipalities throughout Westchester County and advance New York State’s climate goals.”

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said: “Westchester is proud to be one of the state’s foremost leaders in combating the effects of climate change, and Sustainable Westchester is an important partner in our ongoing efforts. With this groundbreaking endeavor, they continue to pave the way for sustainable energy solutions that benefit both the environment and Westchester County residents.”

Rebecca Roberts, Con Edison E-Mobility Department Manager, said: “Con Edison is proud to support Sustainable Westchester’s Sunshine to EV System, which represents an important step in delivering the clean energy future to Westchester County.”

Devin Callahan, Communications Director for the New York League of Conservation Voters, said: “Decarbonizing the transportation sector is essential to addressing the climate crisis and meeting the state’s CLCPA goals, and to do that we need a robust network of fast charging hubs so New Yorkers feel comfortable ditching their gas-guzzling cars in favor of clean electric vehicles. By using solar energy to power EVs, the ‘Sunshine to EV’ initiative is a true environmental gem and another example of Sustainable Westchester using its platform to reduce New York’s carbon footprint.”

“Our focus on building energy solutions that make communities empowered, self-sustaining and resilient perfectly aligns with the work Sustainable Westchester is doing here in New York,” said Himanshu Sudan, CEO of Jule. “We were thrilled to partner with them on this project and look forward to working together in the future to make renewable energy more readily available to residents and visitors here in Westchester.”
